Great Green Macaws released back into the wild
The World Parrot trust is based at Paradise Park in
Hayle, Cornwall, and for several years now the trust has been helping
to fund what is known as the Ara Project in Costa Rica.
The Great Green
Macaw is very rare in Costa Rica due to the loss of 90% of its range,
and they are now down to around 300 birds in the wild and it is thought
that there are only 25 to 35 breeding pairs.
Curator David Woolcock explains “The
funding has helped the project build release aviaries for the Great
Green Macaws that they are breeding in captivity. The good news is that
on August 8th they were able to release their first 10 birds back into
the wild. So this project which was helped by the World Parrot Trust
is making a real difference to conservation in the wild.”
The Trust has helped in the survival of 50 species of parrot in 30 countries around the world.
