Peregrine Falcon receives TLC at Paradise Park in Hayle

An injured Peregrine Falcon was recently taken into Rosevean Vets in Penzance.  Steve Otty assessed and treated the bird then asked keepers at Paradise Park if they would take it in for recuperation.

Curator David Woolcock explains “This falcon is a very young bird and was in a bad way with a broken leg and wing. It had been fitted with a leg ring, so we asked Dale Jackson if he could identify it. Dale was a bird keeper at Paradise Park for many years and is also a volunteer for the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology), and he was able to tell us the exact nest near the coast of Cornwall where it was hatched.”

Leg rings are fitted by licensed volunteers when chicks are still in the nest to monitor the species, which is on the Amber List of UK birds of conservation concern.

“The good news is that our vet Steve is confident the bird will make a full recovery, and we should be able to release it back into the wild in another 4 to 6 weeks time. The bird has adapted well to being in an enclosure and is eating well. Once healed it should be perfectly capable of flying as strongly as it did before.”

Keepers believe it is female and she is being kept off show to the public to allow her to recover. At Paradise Park a Lanner Falcon called Cleo, displays her amazing flying skills in the Park’s daily ‘Eagles of Paradise’ show.

Red Panda Keeper Donna Chidgey tells us about Lang Za and Pandora

GET CLOSE TO A RED PANDA!! - A fantastic weekend of activities PLUS A CHANCE TO MEET A RED PANDA!

Calling all Red Panda Rangers

Come and join in the fun on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th August at Paradise Park in Hayle, where you can win a chance to feed a Red Panda, meet and watch wildlife artist Jon Tremaine drawing the Red Pandas, tackle the 'Ranger Trail', get creative by mask making plus join in fun workshops – as well as a full timetable of other wildlife feeding times and displays.

Keeper Donna Chidgey said "This event proved so popular last year that we decided to make it a full weekend this August.  We have two Red Pandas, Pandora is 14 years old and Lang Za who is just 5 years old. We do training for several reasons. It brings them down from the trees so the public get a chance to see them but more importantly for husbandry. This means they can do things like ‘high five’ a target so when the vet comes to check claws and feet etc. the pandas trust me and will come down to be examined."

EVENTS OVER THE WEEKEND
  • WIN AN AMAZING RARE OPPORTUNITY TO FEED OUR RED PANDAS
On both days staff will be running raffles for two people (one at 1:30 and one at 4:30 – the draws take place 30mins before each event) to be able to join keeper Donna Chidgey to feed and help train Lang Za and Pandora the Red Pandas.
  • Meet and watch wildlife artist Jon Tremaine - Wildlife artist Jon Tremaine will be at Paradise Park on Saturday afternoon and during the day on Sunday where visitors can meet him and watch him drawing the pandas plus see more of his work on display and available for purchase.
  • Become a Red Panda Ranger and collect your certificate and badge and Have fun in our brilliant workshops - get creative and make a Red Panda mask (small extra fee)
  • Have your face painted like a red Panda (please note there is an extra charge for this)
  • Try some special home-made Red Panda cakes in the Otter Pool Cafe.
Wildlife Artist Jon Tremaine has donated a beautiful drawing to help raise much needed funds for the Red Panda Project www.redpandanetwork.org. Prints of the drawing are for sale in the gift shop. Jon said “As a regular visitor at Paradise Park I was pleased to be asked by Donna the Red Panda keeper to create an original pen and ink drawing of Lang Za to raise funds for Red Panda conservation. I had a wonderful afternoon getting to know and photographing Lang Za, it was a great opportunity for me to get close to such a wonderful species and help with such an important cause”

It promises to be a fun filled weekend, plus there will be all the daily events including penguin photocall, help feed the Lorikeets, the Eagles of Paradise display, Carrot Time on the Fun Farm and much more.
